About NNSA Los Alamos Site Office
LASO building being renovated
in the mid '50s
The Site Office was constructed during the early 1950's as barracks to the Security personnel, back when it was federalized. Then in the mid 50's, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) moved into the Site Office and it was renovated into offices from barracks. Still today, certain offices have remnants of the barrack days—sinks, built-ins, laundry chutes, and original lamps.
From the 1950's to the present day, the following Federal agencies have called LASO their home: The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Energy Research & Development Administration (ERDA), Department of Energy (DOE), and the current agency, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
NNSA Los Alamos Site Office Mission
The National Nuclear Security Administration's Los Alamos Site Office is responsible for administering the Los Alamos National Laboratories contract and managing Federal Activities. For over 63 years, the Laboratory has served the nation by developing and applying the best science and technology to ensure its safety and security.
NNSA History
Established by Congress in 2000, the NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear energy. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad.
